Iran Cancels Flights as US Aviation Sanctions Hit
Iran has cancelled flights from Tehran to Baghdad and Muscat as new US sanctions targeting Iranian airlines and the foreign companies that service them take effect. The measures are designed to sharply restrict the ability of Iranian carriers to operate internationally.
Iran Cancels Baghdad and Muscat Flights
Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization said airports in Baghdad and Muscat would stop accepting Iranian flights from midnight on Wednesday.
Authorities are working to redirect Baghdad-bound flights to Najaf, while discussions with Oman are continuing over services to Muscat.
Other international routes, including flights to Istanbul, were initially expected to continue operating, although the wider sanctions could lead to further disruptions as airports and aviation service providers assess their exposure.
US Targets Services Used by Iranian Airlines
The latest US measures threaten secondary sanctions against foreign companies that provide essential aviation services to Iranian carriers.
These services include aircraft refuelling, ground handling, ticket sales and other support required for international flight operations.
US authorities have warned that companies continuing to service sanctioned Iranian airlines could lose access to the American financial system.
The measures therefore do not directly close foreign airspace to Iranian aircraft but could make regular international operations increasingly difficult.
Iran Aviation Sector Faces Wider Disruption
The sanctions form part of Washington’s expanding economic pressure campaign against Tehran amid the continuing US-Iran conflict.
Iranian aviation already faces longstanding difficulties obtaining aircraft, spare parts and maintenance services because of previous international restrictions.
The latest sanctions could further reduce international connectivity if additional airports, fuel suppliers and ground-handling companies refuse to deal with Iranian carriers.
The aviation restrictions come even as diplomatic efforts continue to seek a broader agreement between Washington and Tehran.
