Trump Says Russia-Ukraine Deal Could Come Soon
US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that Russia and Ukraine could reach an agreement to end the war, saying both Moscow and Kyiv want the conflict to stop. His remarks came during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Trump Says Russia and Ukraine Want War to End
Trump said he believed both sides were increasingly interested in ending the fighting after more than four years of war.
He said his administration had discussed possible solutions extensively with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that he believed “something’s going to happen”.
Trump did not disclose the terms of any potential settlement or indicate that Russia and Ukraine had reached agreement on the major issues separating them.
Zelenskyy Seeks Deal Before Winter
Zelenskyy thanked Trump for his support and said Ukraine wanted the war brought to an end as quickly as possible, preferably before winter.
The Ukrainian President said Kyiv and Washington were discussing possible de-escalation measures that could create conditions for further diplomacy.
Ukraine has also indicated its willingness to consider a reciprocal halt to strikes on energy infrastructure if Russia agrees to stop targeting Ukrainian electricity, heating and water systems.
US Increases Economic Pressure on Russia
The talks come as Washington increases economic pressure on Moscow through recently approved sanctions legislation targeting Russia’s petroleum, banking and military-linked sectors.
The measures also strengthen US powers to penalise countries involved in significant Russian energy trade.
Despite renewed diplomatic activity, fighting continues, with both Russia and Ukraine carrying out long-range drone and missile attacks. No comprehensive ceasefire or final peace framework has yet been announced.
