Xi Jinping Arrives in US for Trump State Summit
Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Washington for a three-day state visit, with US President Donald Trump personally receiving him at Joint Base Andrews. The visit sets the stage for high-level talks aimed at stabilising relations between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump Personally Welcomes Xi Jinping to US
Trump broke with usual protocol by travelling to Joint Base Andrews to greet Xi and First Lady Peng Liyuan on their arrival on September 23.
Xi’s visit, running from September 23 to 25, is his first trip to Washington in more than a decade. A formal State Arrival Ceremony is scheduled at the White House, followed by bilateral talks and a state dinner hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
US-China Trade and AI Talks in Focus
Trade is expected to dominate the Trump-Xi summit after Washington and Beijing agreed to extend their existing trade truce until January.
The leaders are also expected to discuss tariffs, Chinese purchases of American goods, rare earth supplies, semiconductor restrictions and artificial intelligence. The two governments have recently explored creating a dialogue on AI-related security risks.
Taiwan and Iran Among Key Strategic Issues
Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive subjects in US-China relations, alongside Beijing’s access to advanced American technology.
China’s purchases of Iranian oil and wider developments in the US-Iran conflict are also expected to feature in discussions.
The summit is the second meeting between Trump and Xi this year and comes as both governments seek to prevent economic and strategic competition from developing into a wider confrontation.
