India Notifies E30 Petrol Standard
India has formally moved beyond E20 petrol by notifying new fuel standards for higher ethanol blends, including E22, E25, E27 and E30, as part of its wider biofuel and energy security roadmap.
India E30 Petrol Standard
The Bureau of Indian Standards has notified specifications for higher ethanol-blended petrol under the new IS 19850:2026 standard. The notification covers petrol mixed with 22%, 25%, 27% and 30% anhydrous ethanol for use in positive ignition engine vehicles.
The move does not mean E30 petrol will immediately be sold across the country. It creates the technical and regulatory framework needed before higher ethanol blends can be introduced commercially.
Ethanol Blending Beyond E20
India has already achieved the E20 petrol target, which blends 20% ethanol with petrol. The new standards indicate that the government is preparing for the next phase of ethanol blending as domestic ethanol production capacity increases.
Higher blending is expected to reduce crude oil imports, support farmers through demand for sugarcane, maize and other feedstocks, and cut carbon emissions from transport fuel. It also strengthens India’s push for energy self-reliance during periods of global crude oil volatility.
Vehicle Compatibility For E30 Fuel
The shift to higher ethanol blends will require attention to vehicle compatibility. While newer vehicles are being designed for E20 fuel, E30 may need further changes in engines, materials and fuel systems.
Automobile manufacturers, fuel retailers and regulators will need to work together before large-scale rollout. The notification is therefore an important first step, but commercial availability will depend on vehicle readiness, supply infrastructure and government rollout timelines.
