The Indian government has issued a strict travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid traveling to Syria amid escalating violence between the Syrian government and rebel groups. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also advised Indians currently in Syria to leave the country as soon as possible, citing significant risks to safety.
In a press release, the MEA stated, “In view of the situation prevailing in Syria, Indian nationals are advised to avoid all travel to Syria, until further notification.” Citizens currently in Syria have been urged to use the earliest available commercial flights to leave. Those unable to depart immediately are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict movements, and prioritize personal safety.
To assist Indian nationals, the MEA has provided an emergency helpline (+963 993385973), which is also accessible via WhatsApp. The Indian Embassy in Damascus remains operational and available to support citizens, who can also reach out via email at hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in.
The advisory follows a sharp escalation in the Syrian civil war, particularly in the northern regions. Rebel factions have reportedly taken control of Daraa, a strategically significant city near the Jordanian border. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, “Local factions have taken control of more areas in Daraa province, including Daraa city. They now control more than 90 percent of the province, as regime forces successively pulled out.”
This comes after Islamist alliances captured key cities such as Aleppo and Hama, intensifying clashes between anti-government rebel groups and forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.
During a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided an update on Indian nationals in Syria. “There are about 90 Indian nationals in Syria, including 14 working with UN organizations. Our mission remains in close contact with them to ensure their safety and security,” he said. The Indian Embassy in Damascus is actively monitoring the situation and staying in touch with the affected citizens.
The escalating conflict in Syria poses severe safety risks for travelers, with frequent clashes and territorial shifts creating an unstable environment. The government’s advisory underscores the urgency for Indian nationals to prioritize their safety and avoid unnecessary travel to the region until further notice.
