IIT Kanpur Study Says E20 Petrol Safe

IIT Kanpur researchers have said extensive testing found no evidence that E20 petrol damages vehicle engines, causes corrosion or creates major technical problems. The findings come amid growing concerns about the nationwide use of petrol blended with 20% ethanol.

IIT Kanpur Study Finds No Engine Damage

Researchers at IIT Kanpur’s Engine Research Laboratory said E20 petrol was tested in existing and older vehicles without evidence of engine deterioration or significant performance problems.

Project scientist Dhruv Raj Karana said the observed reduction in fuel efficiency was below 5%. He added that similar variations could occur during repeated tests with regular petrol because mileage is also affected by driving style, road conditions, tyre pressure and vehicle maintenance.

The laboratory has also successfully tested E85 fuel containing 85% ethanol, although that blend requires specially designed engines and compatible fuel systems.

E20 Petrol Mileage Concerns Addressed

Automobile expert Hormazd Sorabjee said concerns about widespread engine damage were exaggerated. He explained that vehicles certified for E10 often have engineering tolerances that allow them to operate safely with E20.

However, motorists may notice a small reduction in mileage because ethanol contains less energy than petrol. Older vehicles may also require earlier replacement of certain rubber components or gaskets during routine servicing.

Maintenance Important for Older Vehicles

Experts advised owners of older vehicles to maintain fuel systems properly and avoid leaving cars unused for extended periods.

Ethanol absorbs moisture, and excessive water contamination can cause fuel separation, starting difficulties or rough engine operation. Poorly maintained vehicles may also experience blocked fuel systems when ethanol loosens accumulated deposits.

Motorists were advised to follow manufacturer guidance and seek authorised servicing if performance problems emerge.
