Government Considers Monthly and Yearly Highway Passes for Passenger Vehicles
The Indian government is exploring the implementation of monthly and yearly toll passes for passenger vehicles traveling on national highways. This initiative aims to streamline toll collection and provide greater convenience for regular commuters.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that the government is considering a system where passenger vehicle owners can opt for a monthly or yearly pass, allowing unlimited travel on national highways during the chosen period. This proposal is part of a broader effort to modernize toll collection and reduce congestion at toll plazas.
The proposed passes would be linked to the vehicle’s registration, enabling seamless travel without the need for multiple toll payments. This system is expected to benefit frequent travelers by offering cost savings and reducing travel time.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is currently assessing the feasibility of this initiative, including the pricing structure and technological requirements for implementation. Stakeholder consultations are underway to ensure the system addresses the needs of commuters while maintaining revenue streams for highway maintenance and development.
This move aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency of India’s transportation infrastructure and improve the overall experience for highway users.
