DMK Questions Udhayanidhi Stalin Arrest
DMK leaders have alleged that Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested to prevent him from questioning the Tamil Nadu government during the ongoing Assembly session. The party described the police action against the Leader of the Opposition as politically motivated.
DMK Questions Udhayanidhi Stalin Arrest
The DMK youth wing claimed Udhayanidhi’s arrest was intended to silence him before he could raise important public issues in the Legislative Assembly. It accused the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government of using the police to suppress the Opposition.
DMK MP Kanimozhi also condemned the arrest, describing it as an act of political vendetta. She alleged that the government acted against Udhayanidhi because it was unwilling to face his questions in the Assembly.
The allegations have not been independently established, and the Tamil Nadu government has maintained that the police action followed complaints over Udhayanidhi’s controversial remarks.
Arrest Follows Controversial Rally Remarks
Udhayanidhi was taken into custody from his Neelankarai residence in Chennai after cases were registered over allegedly misogynistic remarks made during a Cauvery water protest in Thanjavur.
The controversy erupted after people in the crowd chanted actor Trisha’s name while Udhayanidhi was criticising Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. His response was widely interpreted as a derogatory double entendre involving the actor.
A TVK women’s wing functionary subsequently filed a police complaint, while the party also approached the National Commission for Women seeking action.
DMK Workers Protest Across Tamil Nadu
DMK workers organised demonstrations in several parts of Tamil Nadu following the arrest. Party leaders maintained that Udhayanidhi had not named Trisha and accused the government of distorting his remarks.
Udhayanidhi dismissed the police action as a diversion from the Cauvery dispute and farmers’ concerns. He said the DMK would challenge the cases through legal channels.
