Bengal Assembly Dissolved After TMC Defeat
West Bengal Governor R N Ravi has dissolved the state Assembly after the completion of its term, formally ending the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government following its Assembly election defeat.
Bengal Assembly Dissolved By Governor
The Governor dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from May 7, bringing the outgoing government’s tenure to an end. The move came after the Assembly completed its five-year term.
The development followed days of political standoff after Mamata Banerjee refused to resign despite the Trinamool Congress losing the election. She had rejected the result and alleged irregularities in the poll process.
Mamata Banerjee No Longer Chief Minister
With the Assembly dissolved, Mamata Banerjee is no longer the Chief Minister of West Bengal. The outgoing Council of Ministers also ceases to hold office once the Assembly’s term ends and the constitutional transition begins.
The TMC has indicated that it may challenge the election results legally. Banerjee had earlier described the mandate as unacceptable and said her party would continue its political fight.
BJP Government Formation In Bengal
The dissolution has cleared the way for the BJP to move ahead with government formation in West Bengal after its election victory. The party is expected to complete its internal process before staking claim to form the next government.
The political transition comes amid tension in the state, including reports of post-poll violence and the killing of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s aide Chandranath Rath. Security has been tightened in several areas as Bengal prepares for a change of government.
