Cricket to Return at LA Olympics 2028 on July 12

Cricket is all set to make a historic comeback to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028, marking the sport’s return after a gap of 128 years. The event will begin on July 12, 2028, and will be hosted at the Fairgrounds Stadium in Pomona, located around 50 km from central Los Angeles.

The competition will feature both men’s and women’s T20 tournaments, each involving six teams. A total of 180 players are expected to participate, with 15 members per squad. The matches will be played in a fast-paced format, with most days expected to host double-headers. Scheduled rest days include July 14 and July 21, while the medal matches are set for July 20 and July 29.

Cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics has been widely welcomed across the cricketing world. It reflects the sport’s growing global reach and is expected to attract a large viewership, especially from countries where cricket enjoys massive popularity. The shorter T20 format was chosen for its wide appeal and suitability for the Olympic schedule.

The temporary stadium at Pomona is being specially developed to host the cricket matches, showcasing the organisers’ commitment to supporting the sport’s Olympic ambitions. Participating teams will likely include top cricketing nations, and the event is expected to boost cricket’s visibility in regions where it is still emerging, particularly in the United States.

The inclusion of cricket in LA 2028 is also being viewed as a strategic step toward the sport’s continued presence in multi-sport global platforms, with fans eagerly anticipating the contest.
