CJI Intervenes After Lawyers Detained in Delhi Protest
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant intervened on Saturday after several lawyers were detained during a protest march near the Supreme Court, with bar associations raising concerns over the use of force against advocates, including women lawyers.
CJI Surya Kant Seeks Release of Detained Lawyers
The Supreme Court Bar Association urgently brought the detentions to the attention of CJI Surya Kant after advocates participating in a protest outside the Supreme Court were taken into custody and moved to the Yamuna Sports Complex.
The CJI subsequently communicated to the authorities that the detained lawyers should be released.
The intervention followed concerns within the legal fraternity over the police action during the march.
Bar Associations Raise Concern Over Police Action
The Supreme Court Bar Association passed a resolution flagging what it described as excessive use of force against the protesting lawyers, including women advocates.
The matter was also taken up by the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association, whose president communicated with the Chief Justice regarding the detentions.
The lawyers had been marching from the Supreme Court area towards Jantar Mantar as part of protests linked to the ongoing controversy over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Solicitor General Also Steps In
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also intervened in the matter as efforts were made to secure the lawyers’ release.
The detentions came amid heavy security restrictions across central Delhi, where multiple protest groups attempted to gather despite police denying permission for the main demonstration.
The episode adds a legal dimension to the wider confrontation over the October 10 protests, which have already seen student activists, political workers and CJP supporters detained across the capital.
