Hundreds of protesters were detained across Delhi on Saturday as authorities moved to prevent a demonstration by the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral-roll revisions.

Abhijeet Dipke detained after landing in Delhi

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and senior leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by Delhi Police from inside their aircraft shortly after arriving from Mumbai at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Videos from the flight showed police personnel entering the aircraft before the three leaders were taken away.

The CJP, which describes itself as a youth pressure movement rather than a registered political party, emerged in May after Dipke responded to a controversial Supreme Court remark comparing a section of unemployed young people to “cockroaches”.

Delhi Police deny permission for Jantar Mantar protest

Delhi Police had refused permission for Saturday’s planned gathering at Jantar Mantar, citing the late submission of the application, previous alleged violations and concerns over public safety, traffic and law and order. The application was submitted on October 7, three days before the planned protest.

Heavy security arrangements, barricades and restrictions were imposed across parts of New Delhi as protesters attempted to reach the demonstration site.

CJP demands Gyanesh Kumar resignation

The movement is demanding Kumar’s resignation over allegations surrounding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties and CJP activists have alleged wrongful voter deletions, while the Election Commission has defended the revision process and rejected accusations of political bias.

Despite the detentions, CJP representatives said the agitation would continue, with activists urged to maintain pressure over electoral transparency and voter-list revisions.
