BMC Acts Against 128 Rustomjee Crown Flats
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun demolition action against alleged unauthorised alterations inside luxury apartments at Rustomjee Crown in Mumbai’s Prabhadevi area. The civic action follows notices issued to 128 flats over alleged violations involving common spaces and sanctioned building plans.
BMC Begins Action at Rustomjee Crown
Civic officials started removing allegedly unauthorised structures from several apartments on August 24. The demolition drive is expected to continue over the coming days as officials inspect flats where deviations from approved plans were identified.
Rustomjee Crown consists of high-rise residential towers in the Crown Mill Compound, with apartments ranging from three to five bedrooms. Several politicians, bureaucrats and prominent businesspeople reportedly own or occupy flats in the complex.
128 Flats Face Unauthorised Construction Action
The dispute began after RTI activist Santosh Daundkar complained about alleged additions, alterations, amalgamation of flats and conversion of common or free-of-FSI areas into private living spaces.
The BMC subsequently issued notices under municipal and town planning laws. Alleged encroachments include common areas near lifts, lobbies and other shared spaces that were reportedly incorporated into individual apartments.
Some reports estimate the market value of the allegedly encroached spaces across the affected properties at more than ₹250 crore, although the precise value varies depending on the area and apartment concerned.
Politicians’ Flats Also Under BMC Scanner
Flats associated with Maharashtra political figures are reportedly among those facing civic scrutiny, alongside properties linked to senior officials and businesspeople.
The BMC’s action concerns specific alleged alterations within apartments rather than demolition of the entire residential towers.
Officials have indicated that further action will proceed in accordance with legal requirements and after examining individual violations.
