Araghchi Likely To Visit India For BRICS Meet

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is likely to visit New Delhi next week for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, as Tehran seeks a larger role for the grouping amid the West Asia crisis.

Abbas Araghchi India Visit Likely

Araghchi is expected to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled in New Delhi on May 14 and 15. The visit would be diplomatically significant as it would mark his first trip to India since the outbreak of the ongoing West Asia conflict.

The expected visit comes at a time when Iran is increasing diplomatic outreach with major global players and multilateral platforms.

Iran Pushes Bigger BRICS Role

Iran has placed high importance on BRICS since formally joining the expanded grouping. Tehran wants the bloc to play a constructive role in addressing the worsening regional situation and supporting stability in West Asia.

The issue was also discussed earlier between Araghchi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Iran has argued that platforms such as BRICS can contribute to regional and global security during times of crisis.

India BRICS Presidency In Focus

India currently holds the BRICS presidency and is preparing to host the ministerial meeting ahead of the wider summit later this year. Iran’s outreach is being closely watched because BRICS now includes influential members such as India, Russia, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The meeting could give Tehran an important platform to raise concerns over the West Asia crisis while engaging India and other major powers through a multilateral framework.
