AAP Threatens Court Move Over MPs
The Aam Aadmi Party has said it will approach the court if seven of its former Rajya Sabha MPs are not disqualified under the anti-defection law after their merger with the BJP was accepted by the Rajya Sabha Chairman.
AAP Seeks Disqualification Of Seven MPs
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said the party would challenge the matter legally if the seven former party MPs are allowed to continue in the Upper House after joining the BJP.
Singh said he had written to the Rajya Sabha Chairman seeking their disqualification, arguing that the move violated the anti-defection provisions of the Constitution. The party has maintained that the MPs should lose their membership because they were elected on AAP tickets.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Accepts Merger
The row began after the Rajya Sabha Chairman accepted the merger of the seven MPs with the BJP. The decision has triggered a major political dispute, with AAP calling the development unconstitutional and politically motivated.
The BJP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha has increased following the switch, while AAP’s presence in the Upper House has sharply reduced. The development is also significant because most of the MPs were elected from Punjab, where AAP is in power.
Sanjay Singh Attacks BJP Over Defections
Sanjay Singh accused the BJP of encouraging defections and weakening the mandate given by voters. He said the party would continue to fight the issue both legally and politically.
AAP leaders have claimed the defections are part of a larger attempt to destabilise the party ahead of future elections. The BJP has rejected such allegations and maintained that the merger was carried out within the legal framework.
