Aaditya Seeks Choice Between Petrol and E20, Writes to PM Modi

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow motorists to choose between 100% petrol and ethanol-blended fuel. He said consumers should not be compelled to use higher ethanol blends, particularly when many existing vehicles were not designed for them.

Aaditya Thackeray Seeks Petrol Choice

In his letter, Thackeray highlighted concerns raised by vehicle owners, especially middle-class families and younger motorists, over the increasing proportion of ethanol in petrol.

He said families often purchase two-wheelers and cars through savings or long-term loans and expect the mileage and performance promised by manufacturers. However, motorists have reported reduced fuel efficiency and changes in vehicle performance after using ethanol-blended petrol.

Thackeray asked the Centre to make both unblended petrol and ethanol-blended petrol available at fuel stations at affordable prices.

Ethanol-Blended Petrol Concerns Raised

The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said several vehicles currently operating in India were not originally designed for fuel containing higher levels of ethanol. He argued that owners of such vehicles should not be forced to bear possible maintenance, mileage or performance-related consequences without an alternative.

He also called for greater transparency over the ethanol-blending programme and its impact on consumers, vehicles and the wider economy.

Sugarcane and Water Use Questioned

Thackeray raised concerns about the increased use of sugarcane for ethanol production, noting that it is a water-intensive crop. He questioned whether expanding sugarcane cultivation for fuel production was sustainable in regions facing water shortages.

He said providing consumers with a fuel choice would protect existing vehicle owners while allowing compatible vehicles to continue using ethanol-blended petrol.
