Nadda Defends Police Action at CPI(M) Office
Union Minister JP Nadda has defended the Delhi Police’s attempt to take SFI leader Aishe Ghosh into custody from the CPI(M)’s AKG Bhavan office, describing it as a routine law-and-order action. Opposition parties accused the police of improperly entering the office of a national political party.
Nadda Defends Delhi Police Action
Nadda told the Rajya Sabha that police personnel had acted to maintain law and order and accused the Opposition of politicising and sensationalising the incident.
He said student activists participating in political movements should be prepared to face arrests and other legal consequences. Referring to his own experience during the Emergency, Nadda said he had been arrested several times from his classroom while taking part in student politics.
His remarks triggered protests from Opposition MPs and contributed to an uproar in the House.
Opposition Questions AKG Bhavan Visit
CPI(M) MP John Brittas raised the matter in the Rajya Sabha, alleging that Delhi Police personnel had attempted to take Ghosh into custody from the party’s office.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge described the incident as shameful and demanded to know who had authorised the police action. Opposition members also sought action against the personnel involved.
The exchange came amid a wider parliamentary debate over police action against student protesters in Delhi.
Aishe Ghosh Not Taken Into Custody
The Delhi Police team reportedly visited AKG Bhavan in connection with an earlier case. An argument followed between police personnel and CPI(M) leaders, after which the officers left without taking Ghosh into custody.
CPI(M) leaders alleged that the action was connected to Ghosh’s participation in the recent student agitation at Jantar Mantar. Police authorities maintained that the visit was part of a lawful investigation.
