Vijay Announces Farm Loan Waiver In Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has announced crop loan relief for farmers and permitted extended daily screenings for new Tamil films. The decisions were taken after a high-level review meeting, but the farm loan announcement has drawn disappointment from some farmers who expected a wider waiver.

Tamil Nadu Farm Loan Waiver Announced

The State government has announced a waiver of cooperative bank crop loans of up to ₹50,000 for marginal farmers. Large farmers will receive relief of up to ₹5,000.

The waiver will apply to eligible crop loans taken from May 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026. The measure is aimed at providing immediate financial support to farmers facing debt pressure.

Farmers Disappointed Over Waiver Scope

Some farmer groups have expressed disappointment over the limited scope of the announcement. They said the TVK manifesto had promised a total farm loan waiver for farmers holding up to five acres of land.

The government has not yet issued a detailed clarification on the criticism. The response from farmers suggests that the waiver may remain a political issue unless the State expands the relief or explains the eligibility limits.

Tamil Films Get Extended Screening Window

Alongside the farm loan relief, the government has allowed theatres to screen five shows per day for seven days from the release date of new Tamil films.

The move is expected to benefit the Tamil film industry by increasing early box office collections. Theatres were earlier allowed four shows a day, and the new permission gives producers and exhibitors additional screening flexibility during the first week.
