US Senator Calls Iran Deal Big Win
Republican Senator Roger Marshall has praised the new memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, calling it a major diplomatic win for Washington. His remarks came as the agreement continues to face criticism from some Republicans and Israeli officials.
Roger Marshall Praises US Iran Deal
Marshall described the agreement as a “winning deal” and argued that it was stronger than the Iran nuclear agreement negotiated during former President Barack Obama’s administration. The Obama-era deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was abandoned by Donald Trump in 2018.
The Kansas senator said the new understanding gives Washington a stronger position by combining diplomatic pressure with international backing. His comments signal support from at least some Republicans at a time when the agreement has divided opinion within Trump’s own party.
Iran Nuclear Deal Faces Republican Backlash
The memorandum has drawn criticism from Republican lawmakers who believe the agreement gives too many concessions to Tehran. Some critics have raised concerns over sanctions relief, Iran’s nuclear programme and the wider security implications for the region.
Marshall, however, argued that any final deal on Iran’s nuclear programme would be supported by a United Nations Security Council resolution. He said this would give the agreement broader international weight and make it more difficult for Iran to ignore its commitments.
Arab Nations Back US Iran Agreement
Marshall also pointed to support from Arab nations as a key diplomatic success for the United States. He said regional backing showed that Washington had secured wider acceptance for the agreement beyond direct talks with Tehran.
The reaction highlights the political sensitivity surrounding the deal. While supporters see it as a path to stability, critics in Washington and Israel remain cautious about Iran’s future commitments.
