US Intel Flags China Risk in Saudi F-35 Deal
US intelligence officials have reportedly warned that China could attempt to obtain sensitive F-35 fighter jet technology if Washington proceeds with a proposed $24 billion sale of the stealth aircraft to Saudi Arabia. The concern centres on potential espionage risks and China’s growing military and technology links with the kingdom.
US Intelligence Flags China Risk in Saudi F-35 Deal
US intelligence assessments reportedly warn that Beijing could seek access to sensitive F-35 technology through espionage operations inside Saudi Arabia or by exploiting existing security and technological ties with Riyadh.
The concern has been circulated within the US government and among lawmakers as the proposed fighter jet sale moves through Washington’s approval process.
The warning does not indicate that China has already obtained F-35 technology through Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Deal Includes 48 F-35 Fighter Jets
The proposed arms package reportedly includes 48 F-35 aircraft along with a spare engine.
The deal has drawn scrutiny in Washington because the F-35 contains some of the United States’ most sensitive stealth, radar, sensor and electronic warfare technologies.
Lawmakers have questioned whether sufficient safeguards can be established to protect classified technology if the aircraft are transferred to Saudi Arabia.
China-Saudi Military Links Raise Concerns
US officials have previously raised concerns over China’s expanding defence and technology relationship with Saudi Arabia.
Those concerns include Chinese involvement in telecommunications infrastructure and reported military cooperation between Beijing and Riyadh.
Washington has long treated protection of F-35 technology as a major national security priority, particularly as China continues developing advanced fighter aircraft and counter-stealth capabilities.
The reported intelligence warning could therefore become an important factor as US officials consider whether to approve the Saudi F-35 sale.
