UP Hikes Minimum Wages After Noida Unrest
The Uttar Pradesh government has raised minimum wages across worker categories after recent labour unrest in Noida, with the revised rates taking effect from April 1. The decision came after protests by factory workers over pay, overtime, working conditions and weekly offs, which escalated into violence in parts of Noida’s industrial belt.
Uttar Pradesh Minimum Wage Hike
The revised wage structure has been divided into three zones. In Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad, unskilled workers will now get Rs 13,690 a month, semi-skilled workers Rs 15,059 and skilled workers Rs 16,868. These are the highest revised rates under the new structure, reflecting the concentration of industrial activity in the two districts.
New Noida And Ghaziabad Wage Rates
For other municipal corporation areas in Uttar Pradesh, the new monthly minimum wages have been fixed at Rs 13,006 for unskilled workers, Rs 14,306 for semi-skilled workers and Rs 16,025 for skilled workers. In the remaining districts of the state, unskilled workers will receive Rs 12,356, semi-skilled workers Rs 13,591 and skilled workers Rs 15,224. The revision is retrospective from April 1.
Noida Worker Protest And Government Response
The wage increase follows days of unrest in Noida, where workers demanded better pay and parity with revised wage levels in neighbouring Haryana. Protesters also raised issues related to overtime compensation, weekly holidays, workplace treatment and labour law compliance. The state government formed a high-level committee to review the situation and hold consultations with workers and industry representatives before approving the hike.
Why The UP Wage Revision Matters
The latest wage revision is significant because it attempts to ease tensions in one of north India’s key industrial regions while also addressing long-pending labour concerns. The move is expected to affect factories and industrial units across the state, especially in high-employment manufacturing zones.
