Tuhin Kanta Pandey Appointed as New SEBI Chairman

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey, the current Finance Secretary and Secretary of the Department of Revenue, as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He will assume the role for an initial term of three years, starting from the date he takes charge.

Transition in SEBI Leadership

Pandey’s appointment comes as the tenure of the incumbent SEBI Chairperson, Madhabi Puri Buch, concludes on March 1, 2025. Buch made history by becoming the first woman to lead the regulatory body when she took office on March 2, 2022. Her leadership followed that of Ajay Tyagi, who served from March 2017 to February 2022, and UK Sinha, whose six-year tenure set a precedent for extended leadership at SEBI.

Pandey’s Professional Background

Before his role as Finance Secretary, Pandey served as Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) and the Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM), both under the Ministry of Finance. He assumed the position of Secretary of the Department of Revenue in January 2025, where he played a pivotal role in shaping India’s fiscal and economic policies. His responsibilities included advising the Finance Minister on critical policy matters, managing the ministry’s operations, and representing it before the Public Accounts Committee.

Expectations from the New SEBI Chairman

As the new SEBI Chairman, Pandey is expected to leverage his extensive experience in public finance and administration to steer the regulatory body towards greater efficiency and transparency. His tenure is anticipated to focus on strengthening investor protection, enhancing market integrity, and facilitating the growth of India’s capital markets. Stakeholders are optimistic that his leadership will bring about progressive reforms and foster a conducive environment for investment.
