Trump, Zelenskyy to Meet in New York
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are set to meet in New York during the United Nations General Assembly as Washington continues efforts to secure de-escalation in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting to Focus on Peace Efforts
Zelenskyy confirmed the planned meeting after a telephone conversation with Trump, saying the two leaders had discussed a range of issues related to ending the more than four-year-old conflict.
The Ukrainian President said peace remained the country’s top diplomatic priority and indicated that proposals for de-escalation were being developed alongside measures addressing broader security concerns.
The meeting will take place as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly, where the Ukraine conflict is expected to remain one of the major international issues under discussion.
US Pushes Russia-Ukraine De-escalation
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was working closely with the US administration on possible steps covering energy security, food security and the protection of civilian lives.
The latest diplomatic engagement follows a visit to Kyiv by Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who held discussions with Ukrainian officials on possible pathways towards reducing hostilities.
Ukraine has previously indicated that it is prepared to consider reciprocal restrictions on long-range attacks if Russia agrees to comparable measures.
New US Sanctions Add Pressure on Russia
Zelenskyy also welcomed Trump’s signing of new legislation expanding US sanctions powers against Russia and countries involved in substantial Russian energy trade.
The New York talks come amid continued Russian strikes on Ukraine and large-scale Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia, underlining the challenges facing any attempt to achieve a wider ceasefire or negotiated settlement.
