Trump Turns to Russia for Diesel Amid India Pressure

President Donald Trump has announced that Russia will supply large volumes of diesel to the United States and global markets, marking a significant policy shift after months of Washington pressuring countries including India to reduce purchases of Russian energy.

Trump Announces Russian Diesel Deal

Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to supply more than 300,000 metric tonnes of diesel immediately, followed by another 500,000 tonnes in November and additional volumes thereafter.

The US Treasury has issued temporary sanctions relief allowing qualifying Russian diesel shipments, with the authorisation extending into April 2027.

Trump said the move was aimed at reducing soaring diesel prices in the United States, particularly for farmers, truckers and businesses facing higher transport costs.

US Move Contrasts With Pressure on India

The decision has drawn attention because the Trump administration has repeatedly criticised India’s purchases of Russian energy, arguing that such trade provides revenue to Moscow during the Ukraine war.

New Delhi has maintained that its energy imports are driven by national interest, affordability and supply security.

Washington’s decision to facilitate Russian diesel imports for its own market has therefore revived questions over whether different standards are being applied when US domestic economic pressures are involved.

Ukraine Criticises Washington’s Decision

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticised the move, arguing that easing restrictions on Russian energy could provide Moscow with additional revenue while the war continues.

Some US lawmakers have also questioned the decision, saying lower fuel prices should not come at the cost of weakening economic pressure on Russia.

Diesel prices in the US have surged amid tight global supply and wider geopolitical tensions, increasing pressure on the administration ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
