Tulsi Gabbard Resigns As US Intelligence Chief
Tulsi Gabbard has resigned as the United States Director of National Intelligence, citing her husband Abraham Williams’ diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer. Her resignation will take effect on June 30, 2026.
Tulsi Gabbard Resignation Confirmed
Gabbard announced her decision in a resignation letter, saying she could not continue in the demanding post while her husband undergoes treatment. President Donald Trump acknowledged her service and confirmed that Principal Deputy Director Aaron Lukas will serve as acting Director of National Intelligence after her exit.
Gabbard was appointed to the key intelligence post during Trump’s second term and was responsible for overseeing the U.S. intelligence community.
Trump Administration Faces Intelligence Shake-Up
Her resignation comes amid reports of internal tensions between Gabbard and the White House, particularly over foreign policy and intelligence assessments. While Gabbard cited family reasons for stepping down, reports also pointed to disagreements over Iran and broader national security issues.
The White House has not officially described the departure as a dismissal, and Gabbard’s public statement focused on her husband’s health.
Aaron Lukas To Serve As Acting DNI
Aaron Lukas, a former CIA officer and Gabbard’s principal deputy, will take charge as acting Director of National Intelligence. The appointment comes at a critical time for Washington, with the Trump administration handling tensions in West Asia, intelligence reforms and domestic political pressure.
Gabbard’s tenure was closely watched because of her anti-interventionist views, past criticism of U.S. foreign policy and controversial positions on intelligence-related matters.
