Trump Says Xi Wants Hormuz Strait Open

US President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping also wants the Strait of Hormuz to remain open, after the two leaders discussed the Iran conflict, energy security and wider global tensions during talks in Beijing.

Trump Xi Talks On Strait Of Hormuz

Trump said Xi supported keeping the Strait of Hormuz open amid fears that disruption in the key shipping route could affect global oil and gas supplies. The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, making its security a major concern for the United States, China and other oil-importing nations.

Trump also said China could play a role in reducing tensions with Iran, given Beijing’s economic ties with Tehran and its dependence on energy imports from the region.

China Position On Iran Conflict

According to Trump, Xi indicated that China does not want Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon. Trump also claimed that China would not provide military equipment to Iran during the ongoing conflict.

The remarks came as Washington continued efforts to pressure Tehran while also seeking diplomatic openings. China has not publicly endorsed all of Trump’s claims in the same terms, but Beijing has repeatedly called for stability in the Middle East and protection of international trade routes.

US China Summit Covers Trade And Taiwan

The Hormuz discussion formed part of wider talks between Trump and Xi, which also covered trade, tariffs, Taiwan and bilateral relations. Trump described the meeting in positive terms and suggested that both sides had made progress.

However, major differences remain between Washington and Beijing, especially over Taiwan, technology restrictions and trade disputes. The latest summit showed limited cooperation on Iran and energy security, even as strategic tensions between the two powers continue.
