Trump Says Iran Wants Deal but Rejects US Terms
US President Donald Trump has said Iran wants to reach an agreement with Washington but is not yet prepared to accept what he considers the “right deal”. His remarks come as the United States intensifies economic pressure on Tehran amid continuing tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme and the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump Says Iran Wants US Agreement
Speaking to reporters, Trump said Tehran was interested in reaching an agreement but had not accepted the terms sought by his administration.
He reiterated that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon remains a central US objective and suggested Washington would continue applying pressure until Tehran agrees to terms acceptable to the United States.
Trump also claimed the US maintains significant military control around the Strait of Hormuz amid continuing disruption to commercial shipping through the strategic waterway.
US Intensifies Economic Pressure on Iran
Trump said Washington’s new economic campaign does not mean military options have been ruled out.
The administration is targeting Iranian oil-smuggling networks, financial transfers, exchange houses, shipping registries and alleged front companies used to maintain Tehran’s access to international markets.
Trump has also warned countries and companies helping Iran bypass US restrictions that they could face significant economic consequences.
Iran Rejects Trump Sanctions Strategy
Iran has rejected Washington’s latest pressure campaign and maintained that previous sanctions strategies failed to force Tehran into accepting US demands.
Iranian officials have also said the Strait of Hormuz will not fully reopen unless Washington meets conditions linked to an earlier interim understanding, including sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
With no broader agreement announced, economic pressure and control of the Strait of Hormuz remain central issues in the continuing US-Iran confrontation.
