Trump Announces $700 Million Coal Funding
US President Donald Trump has announced a $700 million federal funding package to support coal plants, mines and energy infrastructure, using emergency powers under the Defense Production Act.
Trump Coal Funding Plan Announced
The package includes more than $425 million for upgrades at 13 existing coal-fired power plants. The administration says the funding will help extend plant operations, protect coal-linked jobs and support grid reliability amid rising electricity demand.
Trump said the move would support the coal industry at a time when power demand is increasing due to artificial intelligence, data centres and industrial activity.
Coal Plants And Export Infrastructure
The plan also includes funding for new and restarted coal facilities. Around $185 million will support coal projects in Alaska, West Virginia and Maryland, while $75 million has been set aside for the proposed West Gateway coal export terminal in Oakland, California.
The White House has framed the plan as part of its broader energy security agenda, arguing that coal remains necessary for reliable and affordable electricity.
Environmental Groups Criticise Coal Push
Environmental groups have criticised the announcement, saying the funding diverts taxpayer money towards a declining and polluting fuel source. They argue that renewable energy and cleaner power systems should receive greater priority.
The move is expected to deepen the political debate in the United States over energy policy, climate goals and the role of coal in the country’s future power mix.
