Tesla India Sells Just 40 Units In October
Tesla’s India operations recorded a sharp fall in vehicle deliveries, with only 40 units sold in October 2025 compared to 64 in September. This marks a 37.5% month-on-month drop, bringing the total number of Tesla cars sold in India so far to just over 100 units since its entry earlier this year.
Reasons Behind The Dip
Industry analysts attribute the decline to high import duties, limited local assembly, and the premium pricing of Tesla’s Model Y — currently the only model available in India. The Model Y is imported as a completely built unit (CBU), attracting nearly 100% import tax, which significantly raises its on-road price. Despite strong brand recognition, this pricing barrier has kept Tesla out of reach for most potential buyers in India’s cost-conscious market.
EV Market Outlook
While Tesla struggles to scale up, India’s overall electric vehicle market continues to expand, led by strong sales in two-wheelers and affordable four-wheelers from domestic automakers. The government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and EV policy reforms are expected to boost local manufacturing, which may benefit Tesla if it commits to setting up a plant in India.
