Tanker With 27 Indians Hit by Mines in Hormuz

A Panama-flagged crude oil tanker carrying 27 Indian seafarers was struck by limpet mines in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering an engine-room fire and temporarily disabling the vessel. The incident, reported on October 30, 2026, has raised fresh concerns about maritime security amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Indian authorities confirmed that all crew members were safe and no injuries had been reported.

Limpet Mine Attack Damages Tanker MT LOUISE 1

The tanker, identified as MT LOUISE 1, was reportedly approached by a small craft that attached two limpet mines to its hull. The subsequent explosions caused a fire in the engine room, temporarily affecting the ship’s operations.

The crew successfully extinguished the fire, allowing the vessel to resume its voyage. No environmental damage was reported.

The incident occurred approximately 46 kilometres northeast of Khasab in Oman. Maritime security officials described it as the first known successful limpet-mine attack in the waterway since the latest US-Iran conflict began in February 2026.

All 29 Indian Seafarers Safe After Two Attacks

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed that all 27 Indians aboard MT LOUISE 1 were unharmed.

A separate incident on October 29 involved the Liberia-flagged oil tanker MT ARZANAH, which came under a projectile attack while carrying two Indian nationals.

Sonowal said all 29 Indian seafarers across both vessels were safe. The government is coordinating with ship management companies and monitoring developments to protect Indian maritime personnel.

Strait of Hormuz Shipping Security Under Threat

Limpet mines are explosive devices attached directly to a vessel’s hull, potentially causing substantial damage without requiring sophisticated weapons systems.

The latest attack highlights the vulnerability of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route connecting the Persian Gulf with international energy markets.

Although Iran has imposed transit restrictions during the conflict, responsibility for the MT LOUISE 1 attack has not been established.
