Mumbai Police have detained a Pune-based businessman after allegedly seizing 14,900 capsules filled with zinc phosphide, a rat poison, during checks linked to a Muharram procession in Mumbai. Police said the accused was intercepted before the capsules could allegedly be distributed. Mumbai Police Seize Poison Capsules According to police, the accused has been identified as Faiyaz Premji, a resident of Viman Nagar in Pune who runs a paint business. He had allegedly been staying at a guest house and dormitory in Mumbai’s Dongri area. The Muharram procession allegedly targeted by the accused was passing through the JJ and Byculla areas. Police said they acted after receiving information about a person suffering from vomiting and stomach pain during the procession. Zinc Phosphide Capsules Found During Probe Investigators said the accused had allegedly procured around 50 kilograms of zinc phosphide and spent several days filling capsules with the toxic substance. Each capsule allegedly contained nearly one gram of zinc phosphide. Police said the accused had planned to prepare nearly 30,000 capsules, but 14,900 were seized before they could reach the public. Officials said timely action may have prevented a major incident. Mumbai Muharram Plot Investigation Expands Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to administering poison and attempt to murder. Investigators are examining the accused’s mobile phone, financial transactions, travel history and contacts to determine whether he acted alone or was influenced by any person or organisation. Police said Premji travelled to Iran and Iraq multiple times between 2019 and 2025, including 19 visits in the past year. Officials said the case is being investigated from all possible angles, including whether the alleged conspiracy was linked to a wider network.
