Vijay Suspends Jail Officials After Theni Escape
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered the suspension of senior prison officials and a reshuffle of jail administrators following the escape of 17 prisoners from Thekkampatti sub-jail in Theni district. The disciplinary action, announced on October 31, 2026, follows a serious security breach on October 26, when inmates allegedly staged a medical emergency before overpowering prison guards and escaping.
Vijay Suspends Jail Officials Over Theni Prison Escape
The Chief Minister directed the Prisons Department to take disciplinary action against personnel responsible for security lapses and inadequate supervision.
Deputy Jail Superintendent in-charge N. Ramalingam was ordered suspended until further notice. Deputy Jailor N. Nageswaran, who had held additional charge of the facility since August 2024, was also placed under suspension effective October 30.
The action was initiated under the Tamil Nadu Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules.
All 17 Escaped Prisoners Recaptured by Police
The jailbreak occurred on the night of October 26 when 17 undertrial prisoners allegedly pretended that a fellow inmate required urgent medical attention.
When prison guards opened the cell, the inmates reportedly attacked and overpowered them before escaping.
Tamil Nadu Police launched a large-scale search operation involving multiple teams and surveillance technology.
Drones helped officers locate eight fugitives hiding in dense vegetation. Police subsequently confirmed that all 17 prisoners had been recaptured.
Tamil Nadu Government Orders Prison Administration Reshuffle
Following the incident, the government ordered transfers of senior prison administrators to strengthen security and accountability.
R. Krishnaraj, Superintendent of Madurai Central Prison, was transferred to Salem Central Prison.
The government also transferred senior officials overseeing prison administration and initiated a review of security arrangements across correctional facilities.
The incident has triggered political criticism, with opposition parties questioning the government’s handling of prison security.
The administration maintains that disciplinary proceedings and administrative changes are necessary to prevent similar incidents and improve supervision of inmates and prison personnel.
