India has witnessed enough protests in recent years for a familiar template to emerge. A grievance begins somewhere among ordinary citizens or students. Within days, political organisations discover it. Celebrity endorsements follow. Social-media personalities arrive with cameras. Ideological groups attach their own vocabulary to the issue. Hashtags are manufactured, spokespersons become recognisable faces, television debates begin and eventually the original people affected by the problem risk becoming supporting actors in somebody else's political production. The grievance may remain genuine, but everything constructed around it begins raising another question: who exactly owns this movement now? Against that background, what happened in Jharkhand deserves considerably more attention than merely another entry in India's long history of examination protests. Students and government-job aspirants had been protesting alleged irregularities surrounding recruitment examinations, particularly the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level examination. Their agitation continued for weeks. Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto undertook a hunger strike lasting 16 days. Eventually, on August 17, the Hemant Soren government cancelled the JSSC-CGL examination and other recruitment processes connected to TDPL, while announcing further scrutiny of the recruitment system. One can debate whether cancelling an examination after candidates have already been selected was the fairest administrative solution. In fact, that decision has now produced another legitimate grievance, with around 2,000 successful candidates protesting because their appointments may disappear through no wrongdoing established against them individually. That issue deserves serious examination in its own right. But it does not diminish what the original protesters demonstrated about the nature of political pressure. They showed that ordinary students with something genuine at stake can force a government to respond. And in our view, that offers a striking contrast with the model represented by the Cockroach Janta Party, or CJP. Jharkhand Students Had Something Better Than Branding The Jharkhand students did not require somebody to invent their grievance for them. Competitive examinations are not abstract political debates for those who spend years preparing for them. For many families, a government examination represents years of tuition, sacrificed income, delayed careers and enormous emotional investment. When questions arise about the integrity of such recruitment, affected candidates already possess the most powerful ingredient any protest can have: personal stakes. That matters because authenticity cannot be manufactured afterwards. A student who believes years of preparation have been rendered meaningless does not require a professional activist to explain his anger. A family watching its child spend another year preparing does not need an influencer to explain unemployment. The grievance explains itself. The Jharkhand agitation therefore carried a simplicity that many contemporary movements lose. These were students demanding answers about examinations and recruitment. Their careers were the issue. Their persistence was the campaign. Their willingness to remain on the streets and, in Mahto's case, continue a hunger strike for 16 days supplied the pressure. Their grievance was their legitimacy. No Celebrity Cavalry Was Required Modern activism increasingly operates on the assumption that a cause becomes important only after important people endorse it. A film star tweets. A celebrity uploads an Instagram story. A national politician visits. Influencers produce videos. Suddenly, people who were nowhere near the original grievance begin defining what the grievance supposedly represents. Jharkhand should challenge that mentality. The students did not require Bollywood to certify that an allegedly compromised recruitment process was serious. They did not need glamorous endorsements to convince ordinary Indians that losing years of preparation because of questions surrounding an examination would be devastating. They did not need a celebrity standing beside them to acquire moral legitimacy. There is something deeply democratic about that. A protest should ideally derive its strength from the number of affected citizens willing to stand behind a clear demand, not from the number of famous people willing to stand in front of them. A Protest Does Not Need An Ideological Certificate The second lesson is equally important. Every student grievance in India does not have to become another battlefield for established ideological student politics. Students are perfectly capable of being angry without somebody supplying them with an ideology. A candidate worried about JSSC recruitment does not first need to decide whether his suffering is Left-wing, Right-wing or centrist. He needs to know whether the examination was fair. He needs to know whether recruitment was conducted properly. He needs to know whether his years of preparation will count for anything. That narrowness of purpose is not a weakness. It is precisely what makes a grassroots protest powerful. Once ideological organisations become dominant, however, the vocabulary frequently changes. A specific administrative dispute starts acquiring national political symbolism. Additional causes are attached. Familiar ideological slogans enter. Soon the discussion is no longer simply about correcting the original injustice. None of this means members of ideological organisations lose their democratic right to participate. They unquestionably possess that right. The issue is one of ownership. When outside organisations become larger than the people directly suffering the grievance, something important changes. Jharkhand's students showed that affected citizens themselves can remain at the centre. No Influencer Needed To Explain Their Anger There is also a lesson here for the age of social-media activism. Today's political protest increasingly comes packaged for algorithms. There are dramatic clips, livestreams, viral slogans, carefully framed confrontations and personalities whose individual social-media reach can become almost as important as the movement itself. That machinery can undoubtedly spread awareness. But reach should never be confused with legitimacy. The most compelling aspect of the Jharkhand agitation was that nobody needed a three-minute viral monologue to understand the problem. Tell an Indian family that students believe a competitive recruitment examination has been compromised and they immediately understand the stakes. That is what an organic grievance looks like. When millions of young Indians compete for limited government employment, examination integrity becomes inherently important. No internet celebrity has to manufacture outrage because the possibility of unfairness is enough to produce outrage naturally. This is precisely why grassroots movements often possess a credibility that political productions struggle to imitate. Then CJP Entered The Picture And this is where the contrast becomes fascinating. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke publicly announced support for the Jharkhand students and said his movement would go to Jharkhand. He described CJP as functioning as a "pressure group" seeking accountability. CJP therefore cannot reasonably be accused merely for expressing solidarity with students. Any citizen or organisation has every right to support them. But the Jharkhand movement also demonstrated why it did not require CJP to become meaningful. The students were already protesting. Their grievance already existed. Their demands were already comprehensible. Their movement had already acquired momentum. They did not need CJP to discover unemployment for them or explain examination integrity to Jharkhand. Indeed, Dipke himself subsequently stressed that the objective was to strengthen Jharkhand's students rather than make himself the face of their movement. On that principle, we agree completely. Because that is exactly how it should remain. The students should be the story. CJP And The Political Production Model Our criticism of CJP is therefore broader than its intervention in Jharkhand. CJP increasingly represents, in our assessment, a very different model of agitation: highly recognisable personalities, powerful social-media amplification, national political attention and an organisation whose brand can become inseparable from the causes it embraces. CJP itself has developed around a highly visible founder and an enormous digital following. Its activities are now discussed not merely as protests but in terms of their potential influence on India's wider political landscape. That does not make its grievances automatically illegitimate. It does, however, make scrutiny of its political character entirely legitimate. There is a fundamental difference between helping a citizen's movement and becoming the reason cameras arrive at that movement. There is an equally important difference between amplification and ownership. When every agitation starts acquiring branded leaders, celebrity attention, ideological fellow-travellers and an accompanying social-media spectacle, the danger is obvious. The organisation begins accumulating political capital from grievances that originally belonged to ordinary people. The protest becomes content. The content builds personalities. The personalities build movements. And eventually the movement itself becomes a political product. That is what we mean when we describe the difference between Jharkhand and CJP as the difference between a protest and a political production. The Jharkhand Students Did Not Need CJP This is perhaps the most uncomfortable lesson for CJP. By the time it announced support, Jharkhand's students had already proved the essential point: ordinary citizens can organise themselves. They can articulate demands. They can withstand pressure. They can attract public sympathy. And they can force political power to respond. The government's August 17 decision was not delivered because an outside organisation suddenly gave Jharkhand students legitimacy. It followed sustained agitation by people directly affected by the recruitment controversy. That should be celebrated. If CJP genuinely believes in citizen empowerment, it should celebrate it too. A successful citizens' organisation should ultimately want to make itself unnecessary. It should want ordinary people to possess enough confidence, information and organisational ability to confront institutions without waiting for a national activist brand to arrive. If every grievance requires CJP before the government listens, CJP becomes powerful. If citizens learn that they can organise effectively without CJP, democracy becomes powerful. There is a difference. The New Protest After The Protest Proves The Same Point The story has now taken an important turn. The cancellation welcomed by protesting aspirants has produced anguish among candidates who had already succeeded in the recruitment process. Around 1,975 successful candidates are now facing uncertainty, and some have protested against the government's decision while demanding protection for innocent appointees and a proper investigation. Their grievance deserves exactly the same respect. This is another reason political organisations should resist converting complex recruitment disputes into simple morality plays. There can be genuine victims on more than one side of an administrative decision. Students alleging irregularities deserved answers. Candidates who cleared the process without any proven wrongdoing also deserve answers. The proper response is evidence, investigation, accountability and a remedy that punishes those responsible without casually destroying innocent careers. Once again, the people directly affected should remain at the centre. Judge Protests By Outcomes, Not Hashtags India also needs to reconsider how it measures the success of protest movements. Trending on social media is not success. A celebrity endorsement is not success. A million-view video is not success. Getting your spokesperson invited onto television is not success. The objective of democratic protest is to force institutions to acknowledge a grievance and respond to it. By that measure, Jharkhand's students have already achieved something significant. The state government made a major decision concerning JSSC-CGL and TDPL-linked recruitment after sustained protests. Whether that decision ultimately survives scrutiny or requires modification to protect innocent selected candidates is another question. But political power was compelled to respond. That is pressure politics in its most basic democratic form. No expensive political theatre is necessary when thousands of citizens possess a grievance they can explain in one sentence. CJP Should Learn From Jharkhand, Not Try To Become Jharkhand CJP says it wants accountability. Good. Then Jharkhand offers perhaps the best possible lesson. Do not make yourself indispensable. Do not allow the personality of an activist to become larger than the grievance of a student. Do not measure success by how prominently the organisation appears in coverage. Do not transform every local grievance into another chapter of a national political campaign. Help citizens obtain information. Help them understand institutions. Defend their democratic right to protest peacefully. Amplify them where necessary. Then hand the microphone back. Because a pressure group should apply pressure on behalf of citizens, not gradually become the protagonist in every citizen's struggle. The strongest movements do not require somebody else to manufacture authenticity for them. Their Grievance Was Their Legitimacy Jharkhand's students have provided India with an unexpectedly important lesson. No celebrity cavalry was required. No famous internet influencer had to become the movement's face. No nationally dominant ideological organisation had to certify their anger. No elaborate political production was necessary to convince people that students worried about their examinations and careers possessed a genuine grievance. They protested because their futures mattered to them. They persisted because they believed something was wrong. And eventually the government responded. CJP and every other organisation hoping to represent India's frustrated youth should study that carefully. There is nothing wrong with solidarity. There is nothing wrong with organisation. There is nothing wrong with using social media to amplify injustice. But there is something profoundly different about a movement whose legitimacy originates with the affected citizens themselves and one whose political packaging gradually becomes as prominent as the cause. Jharkhand's students did not require somebody to manufacture their legitimacy. Their grievance was their legitimacy. That is the difference between a protest and a political production.
