Supreme Court Praises Bengal Voter Turnout
The Supreme Court on Friday praised the high voter turnout recorded during the West Bengal elections and noted the absence of major violence during polling. The remarks came during a hearing linked to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in the state.
Supreme Court Praises West Bengal Elections
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the strong turnout reflected the strength of democracy. The court noted that voters had participated in large numbers despite earlier concerns surrounding the electoral roll revision process.
The observations came while the bench was hearing matters related to the West Bengal Special Intensive Revision, which had triggered legal challenges over deletion of names from the voter list.
High Voter Turnout Seen As Democratic Strength
The court viewed the heavy polling percentage as a positive sign for democratic participation. The bench observed that such voter enthusiasm showed public confidence in the election process.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi also noted that the absence of large-scale violence was an important achievement. The Solicitor General agreed and said security forces had played a strong role in preventing major incidents, though some isolated incidents were reported.
Bengal SIR Petitions Before Supreme Court
The Supreme Court was considering petitions by people who claimed their names were deleted from the electoral roll after the Special Intensive Revision. The court, however, asked such petitioners to approach the appellate tribunals formed for hearing these grievances.
The bench indicated that the legal process available under the election framework should be used first before seeking direct intervention from the Supreme Court.
Court Notes Peaceful Polling In Bengal
The court’s remarks are significant because West Bengal elections have often seen concerns over political violence. The combination of high voter turnout and limited violence was seen by the bench as a positive development for the electoral process.
