Modi, Xi Offer ‘Good Offices’ to Help End Ukraine War Says Kremlin
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have offered their “good offices” to help find a settlement to the Ukraine war, according to the Kremlin, as diplomatic efforts surrounding the conflict gained fresh attention during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
Kremlin Says Modi and Xi Offered Help on Ukraine
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said both Modi and Xi showed a strong interest in efforts to resolve the conflict during their separate bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Peskov said the two leaders actively offered their “good offices” to assist in finding a solution.
The remarks indicate a willingness by India and China to facilitate diplomacy, but do not amount to the announcement of a joint mediation initiative or a formally agreed peace process.
India Continues Dialogue and Diplomacy Push
India has consistently maintained that the Russia-Ukraine conflict must ultimately be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
Modi has repeatedly raised the humanitarian and economic consequences of the war during engagements with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
New Delhi has maintained communication with Moscow and Kyiv throughout the conflict while avoiding endorsement of a specific externally imposed settlement.
China Also Seeks Role in Ukraine Peace Efforts
China has separately promoted diplomatic initiatives on Ukraine and has previously presented proposals calling for negotiations, protection of civilians and respect for sovereignty.
The reported offers from Modi and Xi come as efforts intensify to restart negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States.
Despite renewed diplomatic activity, significant differences remain between Moscow and Kyiv, particularly over territory and the terms of any eventual settlement.
