Sundar Pichai Admits Google Trails in AI Coding Race
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has acknowledged that the company is currently behind rivals Anthropic and OpenAI in the rapidly growing field of agentic coding. He said Google may not have given the technology sufficient priority when autonomous AI programming tools began gaining momentum.
Google Trails in Agentic AI Coding
Agentic coding tools can independently write, test, debug and improve software while completing multi-step development tasks with limited human supervision.
Anthropic has built a strong position through Claude Code, while OpenAI has expanded its Codex coding agent. These platforms have gained adoption among professional developers and companies seeking to automate parts of software development.
Pichai admitted that Google did not initially approach agentic coding with the same level of focus as some competitors.
Sundar Pichai Admits Google Missed Opportunity
The Google CEO said the company may not have had the necessary “orientation” towards agentic coding when the category started developing.
However, he maintained that Google remains competitive in artificial intelligence more broadly and has the research expertise, computing infrastructure and product ecosystem required to close the gap.
The admission does not mean Google is losing the entire AI race. The company remains a major competitor through its Gemini models, AI-powered search features and integration across Android, Workspace and cloud services.
Google Expands AI Coding Tools
Google is responding by strengthening its coding-agent portfolio through products including Gemini Code Assist and its Antigravity development platform.
The company is also introducing newer Gemini models designed to complete complex programming tasks more quickly and operate across multiple tools.
Competition in AI coding has intensified because businesses view software development as one of the clearest commercial applications for generative AI.
Pichai said coding was likely to remain a major area of investment as AI agents become more capable of handling complete workflows rather than merely suggesting individual lines of code.
