Meta Pulls Instagram AI Image Feature
Meta has withdrawn a controversial AI image-generation feature that allowed users to create images of people using photographs from public Instagram accounts. The Facebook parent acknowledged that the feature had “missed the mark” following strong criticism over consent, privacy and potential misuse.
Meta Withdraws Instagram AI Image Feature
The feature was introduced through Meta’s AI image-generation tool and allowed users to reference public Instagram accounts while creating customised images.
By entering a person’s Instagram username, users could generate AI images based on photographs available on that public profile. Critics warned that the feature could enable impersonation, harassment, scams and non-consensual deepfakes.
Meta removed the capability only days after its launch as concerns intensified among Instagram users, privacy campaigners and entertainment-industry representatives.
Privacy Concerns Trigger Backlash
The controversy centred on claims that the feature was enabled without sufficiently clear consent from individuals whose images could be reused.
Actors and industry unions warned that publicly sharing a photograph on Instagram should not automatically permit others to create AI-generated replicas of that person.
Users could restrict such use through Instagram’s privacy settings or by making their accounts private, but critics argued that the feature should have required explicit permission from the beginning.
Meta Admits Feature Missed the Mark
Meta said the tool was intended to support creativity while giving people control over how their content was used. However, the company acknowledged that its initial approach failed to meet expectations.
The company has now removed the option to tag public Instagram accounts in AI image prompts.
The reversal highlights growing pressure on technology companies to introduce stronger safeguards for AI-generated content, particularly when tools can reproduce identifiable individuals without their direct approval.
