Stage 2 of GRAP Activated in Delhi-NCR as Air Quality Worsens
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has invoked Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR as air quality continues to decline.
As of 8 am today, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 317, placing it in the “very poor” category, according to real-time data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).
Air Quality Worsens, GRAP Stage 2 Activated
With an AQI between 301 and 400 classified as “very poor,” Delhi’s air pollution levels have triggered Stage 2 of the anti-pollution measures under GRAP. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the AQI will remain in this category for the coming days due to unfavorable weather conditions. Additionally, stubble burning in nearby states like Haryana and Punjab has been identified as a significant contributor to the spike in pollution levels.
Key Measures Under GRAP Stage 2
Under GRAP Stage 2, several restrictions have been implemented to control the worsening air quality:
- The use of coal, firewood, and diesel generators (except for emergency services) is restricted.
- Daily mechanical road sweeping and water sprinkling will be carried out to control dust.
- Construction sites must adhere to strict dust control measures.
- Traffic personnel will be deployed at congestion points, and vehicle parking fees will be increased to discourage private vehicle use.
Authorities have also urged the public to use public transport, avoid open burning of waste, and minimize construction activities that generate dust during the high-pollution months of October to January. The activation of GRAP Stage 2 highlights the growing concern over air pollution in the region as Delhi braces for further AQI deterioration.
