Eight MPs from Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP) are set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, with Maharashtra-related concerns expected to feature prominently. Congress has also urged the delegation to raise its demand for implementing women’s reservation without linking it to delimitation.

The NCP (SP) MPs are expected to discuss several issues affecting Maharashtra, including farmer distress, water shortages and pressures linked to rapid urbanisation.
The meeting is aimed at placing these concerns directly before PM Modi and seeking greater attention from the Centre. The interaction has also attracted political interest because it comes amid a wider national debate over delimitation and future parliamentary representation.
Congress Raises Women’s Reservation Demand
Congress has urged Sharad Pawar’s party to use the meeting to press for implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act without waiting for a delimitation exercise.
The legislation passed in 2023 provides 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. Its implementation, however, is linked to a future census followed by delimitation.
Opposition parties have argued that this linkage could significantly delay the introduction of reserved seats for women.
Delimitation Debate Remains in Focus
Delimitation has become an increasingly important political issue, particularly over concerns about how any future redistribution of parliamentary seats could affect representation among states.
Congress wants the NCP (SP) MPs to reinforce the opposition’s position that women’s political representation should not remain dependent on a separate and potentially lengthy delimitation process.
The meeting is therefore expected to combine Maharashtra-specific concerns with the broader national debate over women’s reservation and electoral representation.
