Seven Killed in Bihar Ashokdham Temple Stampede
At least seven devotees were killed and more than a dozen others injured in a stampede at the Ashokdham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Monday morning. The incident occurred as large crowds gathered for prayers during the holy month of Shravan.
Ashokdham Temple Stampede Kills Seven
The stampede occurred amid a heavy rush of devotees arriving at the temple for Jalabhishek and other religious rituals.
According to preliminary information, a sudden crowd surge caused people to lose balance and fall over one another near the temple complex. Barricades were also reportedly affected during the rush.
Police, district administration officials and emergency teams reached the site soon after the incident. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, while rescue and relief operations were carried out around the temple.
Shravan Crowds Pack Bihar Shiva Temple
Ashokdham Temple attracts large numbers of Shiva devotees during Shravan, with Mondays witnessing particularly high footfall.
The August 17 gathering was especially crowded as worshippers arrived from surrounding areas to offer prayers. The sudden arrival of additional devotees is believed to have increased pressure around entry and movement points within the temple area.
Authorities are examining whether crowd-management arrangements were adequate for the number of people present.
Bihar Temple Stampede Cause Under Investigation
Initial accounts suggested that panic may have been triggered by confusion near an electricity pole, although the exact cause has not yet been officially established.
Officials are investigating the sequence of events, including crowd movement, barricading and security arrangements at the temple.
The death toll was initially reported as six before later updates put the number of fatalities at seven.
