SC To Hear Karur Stampede Plea
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear an application in the Karur stampede case alleging that witnesses in the ongoing CBI investigation are being influenced by political figures now holding office in Tamil Nadu.
Karur Stampede Case In Supreme Court
A partial working day bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Sheel Nagu agreed to list the matter for hearing on July 7 after the plea was mentioned before the court.
The application relates to the CBI probe into the Karur stampede, which took place during a political rally last year and led to the deaths of 41 people. The investigation is being conducted under Supreme Court directions.
Witness Influence Allegations Raised
Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing in the matter, told the court that some accused persons who are now ministers in the present Tamil Nadu government were allegedly attempting to influence witnesses.
The plea was filed by DMK leader R S Bharathi. It alleged that recent public remarks by Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna, who is among those charge-sheeted in the case, could affect the fairness of the ongoing CBI investigation.
CBI Probe Under Court Scrutiny
The application also referred to reports that Chief Minister Vijay may visit Karur on July 10 to distribute government orders, compassionate appointments and relief measures to families of the victims.
The plea has sought directions to ensure that interactions with victims’ families, who may be material witnesses in the case, do not interfere with the investigation.
The Supreme Court’s decision to hear the matter keeps the focus on witness protection and the integrity of the CBI probe in one of Tamil Nadu’s most serious recent crowd tragedy cases.
