India, Australia Set For Uranium Pact

India and Australia are expected to finalise a uranium supply agreement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia this week, marking a significant step in India’s nuclear energy expansion plans.

India Australia Uranium Supply Pact

The proposed uranium supply pact is expected to be one of the key outcomes of the visit, as New Delhi looks to secure long-term fuel sources for its growing nuclear power programme.

India has been working to expand nuclear energy as part of its wider strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, improve energy security and support clean power generation. Uranium supplies from Australia would help strengthen fuel availability for India’s existing and planned nuclear reactors.

Nuclear Power Push In India

The agreement is being discussed against the backdrop of India’s target to increase nuclear power capacity in the coming years. Stable uranium imports are considered important because India’s domestic uranium resources are limited compared to its future energy requirements.

Australia has some of the world’s largest uranium reserves, making it an important potential supplier for India. The two countries had signed a civil nuclear cooperation agreement in 2014, but commercial supply arrangements have taken time to progress.

India Australia Strategic Partnership

Apart from uranium supply, discussions during the visit are expected to cover critical minerals, clean energy, cybersecurity, defence cooperation and trade.

India and Australia have been steadily deepening economic and strategic ties through the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement and wider cooperation under the Indo-Pacific framework.

The expected uranium deal would add a major energy security dimension to the partnership and reinforce Australia’s role in supporting India’s clean energy transition.
