Russian Missile Attack on Kyiv Kills One
A Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv killed at least one person early Thursday, as explosions and fires were reported across the Ukrainian capital. Separate strikes in western Ukraine injured several people and prompted neighbouring Poland to activate military aircraft.
Russian Ballistic Missiles Strike Kyiv
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said emergency crews were deployed after explosions were heard across the city during an air-raid alert. One person was killed, while fires broke out at several non-residential locations.
Residents were urged to remain inside shelters as authorities warned that additional missiles could be approaching. Emergency teams inspected affected areas and assessed damage while searching for further casualties.
The attack followed repeated Russian missile and drone strikes on the Ukrainian capital during July.
Lviv Buildings Damaged in Russian Attack
Russian missiles also struck the western city of Lviv, located close to the Polish border. Residential buildings were damaged and at least six people were reported injured.
Western Ukraine has generally faced fewer attacks than eastern and central regions, but strikes near Lviv have increased concerns because of the city’s proximity to NATO territory.
Ukraine has continued calling for additional air-defence systems and interceptor missiles capable of countering ballistic weapons.
Poland Scrambles Fighter Jets
Poland deployed military aircraft and placed ground-based air-defence and radar systems on heightened readiness as a precaution during the Russian assault.
The NATO member has repeatedly activated its forces when attacks target western Ukraine, particularly locations near the Polish border.
The latest strikes came amid continuing exchanges of missiles and drones between Russia and Ukraine, with military, industrial and energy infrastructure among the targets.
