Khawaja Asif Calls PoK Protesters Enemies
Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has described protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as “enemies” comparable to India and ruled out dialogue with them. His remarks came amid deadly clashes between demonstrators and security forces following a long march towards Muzaffarabad.
Khawaja Asif Rules Out Protester Talks
Asif said Pakistan’s government would not negotiate with the protesters, placing them in the same category as India and calling them enemies of the country.
Prime Ministerial adviser Rana Sanaullah separately alleged that demonstrators intended to take control of Muzaffarabad and Mirpur by force. He claimed their actions resembled an attack on the Pakistani state.
However, protest leaders rejected accusations that marchers were armed or attempting to seize cities.
PoK Protest Clashes Leave 20 Dead
The Joint Awami Action Committee said at least 20 of its activists had been killed and dozens injured in clashes since Monday. The organisation accused security personnel of opening fire on participants in its march.
Law-enforcement authorities disputed the reported death toll and alleged that protesters had fired at security personnel. The conflicting claims could not be independently verified.
Shops and markets in Mirpur remained closed as tensions continued across the region.
JAAC Protests Follow Failed Negotiations
The JAAC has organised protests over disputed legislative seats, political representation, economic conditions and alleged government interference in regional affairs.
Negotiations between the organisation and Pakistani authorities failed before the latest violence. The group later began a long march from Rawalakot towards Muzaffarabad.
Authorities suspended internet services and restricted media coverage as the unrest intensified. Elections in the region have also faced allegations of violence and widespread manipulation.
