Sheikh Hasina Plans Bangladesh Return
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reaffirmed plans to return home in December 2026 despite facing imprisonment and a death sentence. She said legal risks would not prevent her from rejoining supporters and challenging restrictions on the Awami League.
Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh Return Plan
Hasina announced her planned return during an audio interaction in New Delhi, marking her first public media engagement since leaving Bangladesh in August 2024. She said she was prepared to face arrest or even death after returning.
The 78-year-old former leader has lived in India since mass protests ended her government. Hasina said her decision was motivated by a duty to the Bangladeshi people and ruled out secret negotiations with the country’s current leadership over her return.
Bangladesh Death Sentence Against Hasina
A Bangladeshi tribunal convicted Hasina in absentia of crimes against humanity linked to the deadly suppression of the 2024 student-led uprising. She received a death sentence, while separate cases and convictions have added to her legal difficulties.
Hasina has rejected the charges as politically motivated and questioned the fairness of the proceedings. United Nations estimates indicated that as many as 1,400 people were killed during the unrest, mostly in actions attributed to security forces.
Awami League Ban Faces Challenge
Hasina demanded that authorities lift restrictions on the Awami League and release detained party members. The party was excluded from Bangladesh’s 2026 general election, which brought the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to power under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Bangladesh has repeatedly sought Hasina’s extradition from India. Her planned return could lead to immediate detention and intensify political tensions between the Awami League and the BNP-led government.
