Russia, Ukraine Announce Rival Ceasefires

Russia and Ukraine have announced separate unilateral ceasefires as the war enters another tense phase around Moscow’s Victory Day commemorations. Russia declared a truce for May 8-9, while Ukraine responded with its own ceasefire plan for May 5-6.

Russia Announces Victory Day Ceasefire

Moscow said its ceasefire would apply around May 8-9, when Russia marks Victory Day with official ceremonies. The Russian Defence Ministry said the truce was declared on the orders of President Vladimir Putin and urged Ukraine to follow the same position.

Ukraine Declares Separate Ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv had not received any official communication from Russia on the ceasefire terms. Ukraine then announced its own ceasefire from midnight on May 5, saying human life was more important than any anniversary celebration.

Moscow Warns Kyiv Against Attacks

Russia warned Ukraine against attempting any strikes during its declared ceasefire period and said it would take measures to protect the Victory Day events. Moscow also issued a direct warning over any attack aimed at disrupting the commemorations.

Ukraine Questions Russia’s Intentions

Zelenskyy said Russia’s decision not to display military equipment at the Victory Day parade showed Moscow’s concerns over Ukrainian drone attacks. He also said pressure must continue to push Russia toward diplomacy instead of further escalation.
