Rubio: India Cannot Stop Russian Oil Imports Overnight

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended President Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily suspend Russia-related sanctions and tariffs, acknowledging that India cannot immediately replace Russian oil imports. The Trump administration will use a 60-day review period to assess the potential economic consequences of imposing additional trade restrictions.

Trump Pauses Russian Oil Sanctions and Tariffs

President Trump signed an executive order on Friday, October 16, waiving provisions of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which authorises punitive measures against countries purchasing Russian energy.

The decision provides India with temporary relief from potential additional US tariffs while Washington evaluates the implications for global energy markets and the American economy.

Rubio explained that the administration must consider disruptions caused by the Iran conflict, Houthi attacks affecting Saudi Arabia and the continuing Russia-Ukraine war before implementing further economic restrictions.

Rubio Acknowledges India’s Dependence on Russian Oil

Speaking to reporters on Saturday before departing for Uzbekistan and India, Rubio acknowledged New Delhi’s efforts to diversify its energy supplies while continuing substantial imports from Russia.

He said India had voluntarily broadened its energy portfolio but could not rapidly replace Russian supplies because changing established energy arrangements requires time.

Rubio also described India as an important American ally and partner, reaffirming the significance of bilateral relations amid ongoing trade disagreements.

US-India Trade Relations Face Further Review

The sanctions waiver comes amid elevated global oil prices and uncertainty surrounding international energy supplies. Washington is seeking to maintain economic pressure on Moscow without worsening energy market disruptions.

Rubio is scheduled to visit India on Monday, October 19, as part of his diplomatic tour.

Although the decision reduces the immediate risk of additional tariffs on Indian imports, future restrictions remain possible depending on the administration’s review.
