Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned from his post months before the 2027 Assembly elections, triggering a major leadership change as the party attempts to address internal factional tensions and strengthen its organisation.

Warring, who took charge of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in April 2022, submitted his resignation after months of speculation over a possible leadership change.
The decision follows internal assessments of the party’s organisation and repeated reports of differences among senior Punjab Congress leaders. The leadership change comes at a crucial stage, with the Assembly elections less than five months away.
Congress is expected to announce Warring’s successor shortly.
Vijay Inder Singla Emerges as Frontrunner
Former Punjab minister Vijay Inder Singla is among the leading names being considered for the state Congress president’s post.
Other senior leaders whose names have figured in discussions include Pargat Singh, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Gurjit Singh Aujla and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria.
A final decision is expected from the Congress high command after consultations with senior state and national leaders.
Punjab Congress Rejig Ahead of 2027 Polls
The leadership change follows a review of the Punjab unit after Sachin Pilot took charge as the party’s general secretary in charge of the state.
Internal factionalism has remained a major challenge for the Congress since its defeat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
The new state president will be tasked with bringing rival groups together, strengthening the party organisation and preparing the Congress campaign ahead of the 2027 election.
