RAF Fairford Terror Suspects Released on Bail
Five British men arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offences have been released on police bail, while counter-terrorism officers continue investigating what prompted their presence near the US-used air base.
Five RAF Fairford Suspects Released on Bail
The men were arrested early on September 27 after police received a report of three suspicious vehicles travelling towards RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
Armed officers detained the five suspects in the nearby Whelford area. They were initially arrested over suspected offences under the Explosives Act and were later held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
After extensive questioning and examination of the vehicles, police released all five on bail under strict conditions governing their movements and contact with others.
Counter-Terror Police Keep Multiple Lines Open
British counter-terrorism authorities stressed that the release does not mean the investigation has concluded.
Forensic specialists and military explosive-ordnance teams examined the three vehicles, while a security cordon remained in place around the area. Around 85 nearby households were temporarily evacuated during the operation.
Police have not publicly disclosed the suspects’ identities, a confirmed motive or evidence establishing a specific planned target.
Iran Link to RAF Fairford Remains Unconfirmed
RAF Fairford hosts US military aircraft and has been used for long-range American bomber operations, including missions connected to the ongoing conflict with Iran.
US President Donald Trump has suggested the incident could have involved Iran, but British authorities have not established or publicly confirmed such a connection.
Investigators are keeping an open mind about whether the suspects may have been acting independently, as part of a wider group or potentially on behalf of another party.
