Putin Praises Elon Musk, Reveals Satellite Talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised SpaceX founder Elon Musk as a “real genius” for developing the Starlink satellite internet network, while revealing that Moscow maintains contact with American partners, including Musk, on satellite operations. Speaking at the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow on October 28, 2026, Putin acknowledged that Russia was still in the early stages of developing its own satellite communication system.

Putin made the remarks while attending a technology exhibition where Russian Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev presented progress on the country’s domestic satellite programme.

Shadayev said Russia had launched more than 30 satellites as part of its efforts to establish an alternative to Starlink.

Putin acknowledged SpaceX’s technological achievements, particularly its deployment of thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit.

He emphasised that Russia maintained communication with American counterparts to prevent satellite interference and ensure orderly operations in space.

Russia Develops Rassvet Satellite Network to Rival Starlink

Russia’s Rassvet project aims to establish an independent satellite internet network capable of supporting civilian and military communications.

The system remains considerably smaller than SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, which operates thousands of satellites worldwide.

Putin said cooperation on orbital safety remained important despite political differences between Moscow and Washington.

Starlink’s Role in Ukraine War Draws Attention

Putin’s comments follow controversy surrounding restrictions on Starlink and Starshield services used by Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine reported that temporary connectivity limitations disrupted military communications and drone operations earlier in October.

Service was subsequently restored, although questions remain about responsibility for the restrictions.

SpaceX has maintained that its civilian Starlink service should not be used for certain offensive military operations.

The developments highlight the growing strategic importance of satellite communications in modern warfare.
